Orcas

OrcasOrcasThis was a lucky capture, in my opinion. I knew it would be a treat to even see Orcas, let alone photograph them. On the journey between Glacier Bay and Victoria, Canada, we had heard that our last good chance to spot whales would be as we approached Victoria. It was cloudy, foggy, and drizzling off and on along the way. I spent most of the afternoon staring at the sea, watching for activity and following the flocks of sea birds, hoping they would alert me to whales. Sure enough, I saw several dorsal fins pop out of the waves. I believe there were four in total. Dorsal fins in a pod like that meant they were Orcas. I kept my camera and lens focused on the pod, hoping to catch a glimpse of at least one breaking the surface, even if only slightly. I was rewarded with this unmistakable image of an Orca. Orcas truly are the apex predators of the sea.
