This mature bald eagle landed just long enough to pick up a snack to eat on the fly...literally. I've seen so many great images of eagles on ice and I was happy to see a few eagles landing on it for some photo ops. I look forward to hopefully having more opportunities like these in the future.

The juvenile bald eagles can be some of the most difficult to photograph because their colors blend so much. At certain angles you can't see their heads as they blend in with their bodies. I like this image of a juvenile bald eagle teetering on a piece of ice as it tries to pick up a small fish on the ice. These small shad were just scattered among these ice chunks due to the cold and, while small, made for easy snacks for these eagles. The juveniles weren't as proficient as the adults at fishing so these sort of meals were perfect....

Here is an image of a bald eagle with talons in the "go" position ready to attack. From this compact, side profile, you forget how big this bird is. I can't imagine seeing something with a 6 foot wingspan and talons locked and loaded coming directly at me; although, I don't think the fish see it coming at all.
