Common Loon in Glacier National Park

Common Loon in Glacier National ParkCommon Loon in Glacier National ParkSo before we left for this cross-country drive to multiple national parks, Evan and I had a few birds we were hoping to see and hear. One of the birds Evan was most excited about seeing was a common loon. While they do migrate through Central Illinois, he hadn’t ever seen one. He loves their call, so we were hoping to see one. We knew we had a chance to see one in Montana at Glacier National Park.

It wasn’t more than five minutes into our first hike on a trail around Swiftcurrent Lake when we heard the loon’s eerie, beautiful call. I will never forget the excitement in his eyes as his head whipped around to look toward me. We both instantly said, “LOON!”

We spotted it out in the middle of the lake, occasionally diving for fish. I was able to grab several images of this beautiful bird.
