I had a lot of fun with my son today visiting Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge to look for birds. We saw several great birds, but the one we didn't expect to see was this Black-crowned Night Heron. I love this image of the Caspian Tern just before breaking the water. I can't imagine what is going through its mind as it is laser-focused on the fish and explodes through the water at 30–40 mph. It is spectacular, beautiful, and violent all at once. Freezing the moment is magical.

Baltimore Oriole Wings

This beautiful Baltimore Oriole put on a show along the road at Moraine View State Park. It was in the tall grasses at eye level. I was able to photograph it from my car as it hopped from stem to stem looking for food. I kept my camera focused on him and waited for this moment.

Wood Duck Hen with Ducklings

I stumbled upon this Wood Duck hen with her ducklings in one of the coves at Moraine View State Park. They kept tucked beneath the overhanging bushes along the bank on the opposite side of the cove. The ducklings stayed very close to their mother. Every now and then, she would squawk at them to stay in line.

Caspian Tern Dive Sequence

Here is another sequence of the Caspian Tern diving for fish at Dawson Lake yesterday (6/25/26). This series captures the dive from a different angle, highlighting some cool wing positions and providing a more head-on view of the catch. I'd love more opportunities to watch and photograph these incredible birds as they fish.
