While magpies were very common out west, they were especially plentiful throughout Theodore Roosevelt National Park. According to All About Birds, magpies share a historic symbiotic relationship with bison, frequently perching directly on the mammals to pick off ticks while also searching the surrounding prairie ground and manure piles for extra food.
